Ocean Pointe Obituary History and Archaeology

Ocean Pointe sits within the Honouliuli Ahupuaa of the Ewa District. That makes land and burial research both deep and long. Haseko broke ground on the first 810 homes in 1997, and the first families moved in by 1998. Before that, the area was farmland and open coast. Archaeological reports from Paul H. Rosendahl, PhD, Inc. document burials, iwi kupuna, and cultural sites that may show up in an Ocean Pointe obituary or land record.

The reports cover survey results, test trenches, and burial treatment plans for the Ocean Pointe project area.

The Hoakalei Cultural Foundation was set up in 2006 to care for the cultural history of the Ocean Pointe and Hoakalei area. Haseko also created the Ewa Beach Community Trust Fund in 1995. Both groups help mark sacred sites and honor ancestors whose graves were found on the land. Check haseko.com for the full timeline of the project.

The foundation works closely with native Hawaiian families to honor iwi kupuna from the Ewa plain.

Note: Iwi kupuna found during construction are protected under state law. That process feeds into records that often touch family and obituary research.

Ocean Pointe Hawaii State Archives Records

The Hawaii State Archives keep records on the Ewa Marina project that later became Ocean Pointe. Box 490-3-25 holds Ewa Marina Community records from 1979 to 1986. You can view the finding aid at ags.hawaii.gov. These files give deep context for land, families, and deaths in the area before the homes were built. The archives also hold the Obituary Index for 1836 to 1950 at the Kekauluohi Building, 364 South King Street, Honolulu.

The index lists most obits from English-language papers in Honolulu. Those include the Pacific Commercial Advertiser, The Friend, the Hawaiian Gazette, Ka Hae Hawaii, and the Honolulu Advertiser. Some Ocean Pointe family trees reach back to Honouliuli families who lived on the plain before sugar farming. The archives hold probate, land, and school files that help tie names together.

Call (808) 586-0329 to reach the reference desk at the Hawaii State Archives. Most records are open to the public with no fee.

Ocean Pointe Newspaper Obituary Notices

The main daily paper for an Ocean Pointe obituary is the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The paper runs paid notices for all of Oahu, including Ocean Pointe. Each entry covers full name, age, town, date of death, date and place of birth, work, list of survivors, service time and place, burial details, and the mortuary handling the service. The online page updates daily.

The Star-Advertiser formed from the merger of the Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. Most Ocean Pointe obits go back to 1998 or later, since that is when the first homes opened. The BYU-Hawaii Joseph F. Smith Library keeps a searchable name index for Oahu obits. Names in all caps came from the Advertiser. Names in mixed case came from the Star-Bulletin.

For older Honouliuli area deaths, the Ulukau Hawaiian Electronic Library hosts a free index to 19th-century papers. Those often list plantation worker deaths in Ewa, which is the broader district that now holds Ocean Pointe.
